JOIST TAPE SOURCING GUIDE
How to source private-label joist tape from China
A buyer’s checklist for comparing joist tape construction, samples, roll dimensions, packaging and production responsibilities before placing an OEM order.
Start with one product brief that every supplier can quote.
For a private-label joist tape, agree the application, adhesive route, facing, dimensions, packaging and sample checks before comparing prices. A low roll price is difficult to evaluate if one quotation uses a shorter roll, a different liner or a different thickness definition.
The brief can begin with a competitor roll, photos or a current product sheet. Identify which details must match and which may change. A reference sample alone does not define a test method, tolerance or packaging requirement.
1. Define the deck and the installer’s conditions.
Record the target country, timber type and treatment, joist and beam widths, installation conditions and intended period of exposure before deck boards are fitted. Tell the supplier whether the product is for joist tops, wider beams, ledgers or several uses.
Ask for application instructions for the proposed construction. Test on the actual timber and surface condition; strong tack on a smooth demonstration board does not establish adhesion to rough or treated wood.
2. Compare the whole construction.
| Part of the product | What to agree |
|---|---|
| Facing | Film material, black finish, flexibility and any required exposure evidence. |
| Adhesive | Butyl or bitumen route, thickness, handling and the conditions for adhesion checks. |
| Liner | Material, release behavior and whether a split liner is required and feasible. |
| Finished roll | Width, length, thickness tolerance, core and winding condition. |
Butyl and bitumen are material families. Neither name proves a service life, temperature range or compatibility result. Compare the exact proposed samples and supporting data. Our butyl and bitumen guide explains the distinction between a material choice and a supported performance claim.
3. Keep imperial and metric sizes consistent.
A 50 ft roll is 15.24 m; a 15 m roll is approximately 49.21 ft. Likewise, 1⅝ in is 41.275 mm and 3⅛ in is 79.375 mm. These conversions help define a purchasing brief; they are not a statement that every size is stocked.
Agree the manufacturing dimension and tolerance, then use the same basis in the quotation, inspection sheet, label and online listing. Specify whether thickness includes the facing or release liner. Hendur’s published total thickness includes both the facing and release liner; compare other suppliers’ values on the same measurement basis.
4. Separate sample approval from packaging approval.
Review adhesion and handling on the selected timber, liner removal, unwind behavior, facing appearance and edge condition. If heat, cold or aging performance matters, agree the test conditions and acceptance criteria before approval.
Then approve the label or box, barcode, installation wording, rolls per carton and pallet arrangement. Confirm whether the sample uses the intended production materials. A hand-prepared sample may not show the final winding or retail packing.
5. Compare quotations on the same basis.
Ask each supplier to state quantity per size, tape MOQ, printed-packaging MOQ, unit price, sample and setup costs, production timing and the delivery basis. Shipping and local import costs need a separate comparison when they are not included.
For a smaller launch, ask whether an existing construction and plain packaging with a label are available. This can reduce custom-material and print requirements, but the supplier must confirm the actual minimum. See what affects MOQ and lead time.
6. Record who is responsible for the order.
Confirm the contracting supplier, manufacturing arrangement, sample approval process, inspection scope and response to a production deviation. Keep an approved sample and a written specification as the shared reference.
